Abstrakt
Nature is filled with patterns, from the stripes of a tiger, to the stains on a giraffe. But how do this patterns arise from a single mother cell is one of the central questions in developmental biology. Alan Turing was one of the first to propose a mechanism based on chemical signals between cells, and modeled it with a set of reaction-diffusion equations. Turing's mechanism in order to be a feasible explanation of patterns in nature it needs to be robust, that is, small changes in its parameters should still lead to the same pattern. However, the equations delimiting the region of parameters leading to a Turing pattern (Turing space) are highly nonlinear, thus making it hard to study the properties of Turing space. In this talk I present the state-of-the-art on Turing space, certain properties of it, and a proposal to simplify the nonlinear equations that define it.
